Nintendo Switch Breaks Older Console’s Record to Become Most Popular Ever
Nintendo reported that the original Nintendo Switch has become the company’s best-selling console of all time, reaching 155.37 million units sold as of December 31, 2025.
The figure surpasses the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units between 2004 and 2011.
Switch 2 Performance
Nintendo said the milestone came during a strong holiday period that saw the company sell 7.01 million units of the Switch 2. Total Switch 2 sales reached 17.37 million units through the third quarter of its fiscal year.
In its earnings report, Nintendo described the Switch 2 as the “fastest-selling dedicated video platform released by Nintendo to date.”
Continued Sales of the Original Switch
Despite the launch of the Switch 2, the original Switch continued to post solid results. Nintendo reported sales of 1.36 million units for the console during the third quarter of fiscal 2026, which it attributed to the system’s lower price point.
Nintendo had previously said the Switch was trailing the DS in lifetime sales and expected to surpass it after the holiday season.
The Switch now stands 5.27 million units behind the PlayStation 2, the best-selling console of all time. Nintendo would need to continue selling the system for several more years to close that gap.
Sales Targets and Forecasts
Nintendo said strong holiday demand puts the company on track to reach its goal of selling 19 million Switch 2 units for fiscal 2026, which ends March 31.
The company has already exceeded its earlier forecast of 15 million units set earlier in 2025.
Game Sales and Financial Results
Game sales also contributed to the quarter’s performance. Mario Kart World reached 14 million units sold, while Donkey Kong Bananza sold 4.25 million units since the Switch 2 launched.
Nintendo reported revenue of 803.32 billion yen ($5.2 billion) for the third quarter, up 86 percent from the same period last year, though slightly below expectations. Profit for the quarter came in at 159.93 billion yen ($1.03 billion), an increase of 20 percent year over year.
Upcoming Releases
The company said future performance will depend in part on its upcoming game lineup.
Key titles scheduled for release include Mario Tennis Fever, expected on February 12, and Pokémon Pokopia, which is set to arrive in March.
