Adobe Changes Course on Discontinuing Animate

Published

on

Adobe has said it no longer plans to discontinue Adobe Animate on March 1, reversing an earlier announcement that set an end date for the application.

In an updated frequently asked questions page, Adobe said Animate will move into maintenance mode and that the company has “no plans to discontinue or remove access” to the software.

Adobe said Animate will continue to receive security updates and bug fixes, but will not receive new features.

The company said the application will remain available for both new and existing users and will be accessible to individual, small business, and enterprise customers in maintenance mode “indefinitely.”

The earlier plan to discontinue Animate drew criticism from users, including creators such as David Firth, who is known for the animated web series Salad Fingers.

Adobe said it is committed to ensuring Animate users retain access to their content regardless of the development status of the application.

An email sent to customers announcing the discontinuation “did not meet our standards and caused a lot of confusion and angst within the community,” according to a Reddit post from Adobe community team member Mike Chambers.

Before the change, Adobe had said non-enterprise customers would be able to access and download Animate content until March 1, 2027, while enterprise customers would have access through March 1, 2029.

Under the updated plan, Adobe said Animate will remain available in maintenance mode without a defined end date.
