Empowered minds change nations
As a youth born only a few decades ago in the 20th century, I write to convey that I read Dawn Young World fairly regularly.
While the features in general are often interesting, the letters in the Mailbox section, verses in Poets’ Corner and drawings in Art Corner in particular enable one to frequently realise the exceptional range of talent, thoughtful intelligence and creativity of Pakistani children.
And when adults like Ambreen Arshad insightfully advise the youth in her reflection titled “Empowered minds change nations,” published on March 7, 2026, on the eve of International Women’s Day on March 8, the weekly attention given to our gifted and charming children becomes especially apt and motivating.
Her stress on the crucial value of obtaining optimal benefits from education as a lifelong asset is always worth remembering and acting upon.

Everything hurt and yet nothing hurts
This is with reference to the story “Everything hurt and yet nothing hurts” by Zainab Sultan (YW, January 10).
It was a thought-provoking story. Very imaginatively the writer placed the reader inside the mind of someone trapped in a coma.
The descriptions of fear, helplessness and silence in that situation were very vivid and clearly conveyed the desperation felt by the person. At the same time, memories of ordinary moments, like playing with friends, drinking tea or spending time with family, showed how precious everyday life really is.
What made the story more meaningful was its reminder that we often take our senses and simple experiences for granted. No doubt the story encouraged gratitude for life.

Small changes, real growth
This is with reference to the article “Small changes, real growth” by Sania Asif (YW, January 3).
The article gave a realistic message to young readers who often feel pressured to make big resolutions at the start of a new year.
It showed that real growth usually happens through small habits, rather than dramatic changes that people often pledge to make publicly, but hardly ever do so.
The examples of studying again after failure, choosing kindness and avoiding unhealthy comparisons on social media made the piece relatable for teenagers.

THE WEEKLY WEIRD
First biomimetic humanoid robot unveiled
Chinese robotics start-up DroidUp has unveiled a humanoid robot called Moya, which the company describes as the world’s first biomimetic AI-powered humanoid.
Moya is designed to mimic human-like movement, facial expressions and even body temperature, which is maintained between 32–36°C. The female version is 165 cm tall and weighs about 32 kg. It is also equipped with an AI camera that can detect people and interact through speech and subtle expressions.
Moya is expected to be released commercially later this year, starting at about $173,000, initially targeting healthcare and education sectors. Public reactions have been mixed, with some praising the technology while others find the robot’s appearance and movements unsettling.
School makes students climb a wall to graduate
A high school in Taiwan’s Changhua County requires students to climb a 15-metre, five-storey-high rock wall in order to receive their graduation certificates.
Ershui Junior High School has the tallest school climbing wall in the country, and students take six climbing lessons each week to prepare for the challenge.
The requirement is designed to improve focus, balance and coordination.
Although the wall looks intimidating, many students enjoy the activity and even practise rock climbing with their families.
Paper planes folding record broken
A Texas man folded 250 functional paper planes in one hour in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record.
Tyler resident Richard DeFreece completed the feat in February, surpassing the 200-plane target set by Guinness. Each plane was tested for flight at the end of the attempt.
DeFreece pursued the record as a long-time goal, choosing the paper plane challenge after discovering it was a record he believed he could break. The achievement is still subject to official verification.
World’s fastest elevator’s top speed is 47 mph
The world’s fastest elevator is located in Guangzhou CTF Financial Centre, Guangzhou, China, and can reach speeds of about 1,200 m/min (around 44.7 mph or 72 km/h). The express elevators, installed by Hitachi Ltd, can take passengers from the ground floor to the 95th floor in about 43 seconds.
The skyscraper, which opened in 2016, is 530 metres tall, with 111 floors above ground. The elevators use lightweight traction systems, aerodynamic capsule-shaped cars, vibration-detecting rollers and pressurised cabins to ensure fast and safe travel despite the extreme speed.

STORY TIME: MITTENS, THE BRAVE CAT – Newspaper
In a dark street lived a stray cat named Cadensa. She had no home except an old carton, which was surprisingly cosy. During the winter, she gave birth to three kittens and named them Lily, Chubby and Mittens.
All three were very playful. However, as time passed, Lily and Chubby got lost. Mittens felt lonely and spent most of her time with her mother because she did not want to be apart from her. Soon summer arrived, and Mittens was now six months old.
Sometimes Mittens would go and play in the wide, open fields. Her mother, however, had grown old and sick. Mittens was deeply worried because she did not want to lose her. But destiny had other plans, and one day her mother, Cadensa, died.
By then, Mittens had become experienced. She had learnt all the hunting skills from her mother. Life continued with hunting, playing and sleeping. However, she was always scared of humans. Every night she feared that someone might harm her. Yet her mother had taught her to face her fears and never hide.
One day, the street was cleared of all the trash, and the box she lived in was also taken away. Mittens decided to leave the area. It was painful, but she had no other choice.
As she walked along the street, a little girl came out of a nearby house. The girl immediately fell in love with Mittens and gave her some food. Mittens was surprised. For the first time, she realised that humans were not always bad.
She continued wandering from place to place. One day, in an abandoned corner of a street, she saw a sad little kitten. When she asked about her, Mittens learnt that the kitten’s name was Lily and that her entire family had died. Mittens felt sorry for her.
Then she had an idea.
“Do you want to come with me on a journey?” asked Mittens.
“Yes,” Lily replied.
“Then let’s go,” Mittens said, and together they began their adventure.
During their uncertain journey, another kitten named Chubby and a puppy also joined them. Soon the four of them became good friends. They cared for one another and protected each other, because they had all lost their families and had now become each other’s family.
One day they wandered into a forest. The forest was dense, but they enjoyed playing there. Suddenly, they saw a lion lying beside a bush. It seemed to be in great pain.
Mittens slowly walked closer. The lion only groaned weakly. She realised something was wrong. After carefully inspecting its paw, she saw a large spike stuck in it, causing it to swell badly.
Without wasting time, Mittens used her sharp teeth and strong grip to carefully pull the spike out.
From that day onwards, Mittens became known around the forest as a courageous young cat. She spent her days protecting the weak, helping the helpless and proving that even a small and ordinary cat can be brave.

WONDER CRAFT: SUNBURST WALL ART – Newspaper
Have you ever noticed that when you play with shapes and colours, even simple things can turn into something you didn’t expect?
This week, I thought, why not make something with shapes and give your wall a fresh new look? Let’s create this bright sunburst art using just a few items that you can easily find around the house.
Things you need:
-
One black chart paper, or black A-4-sized paper
-
Red or (colour of your choice) glitter sheet
-
6 Bar-b-cue skewers or sticks
-
One circle mould (you can use any bowl)
-
Scissors
-
Ruler
-
Pencil
-
Hot glue or glue stick
Directions:
-
Draw a circle on the glitter sheet with the help of a mould and cut it out. The circumference of the circle should be about four inches or smaller, depending on the size of the background sheet you are using; picture 2.
-
Cut this circle in half; picture 3.
-
On the remaining glitter sheet, draw and cut teardrop shapes in different sizes. Each teardrop should be no bigger than one inch; pictures 4 and 5.
-
If the barbecue skewers or sticks are too long, break or cut them into smaller pieces, such as 1 inch, 2 inches and 3 inches. Then paste one teardrop shape on the end of each stick piece; pictures 6 and 7.
-
Take one long skewer/stick, place and paste it in the middle of the black sheet. Now, paste the two half-circles on the right and left sides of the stick, leaving about 1 centimetre of space at the top and bottom of the stick, as shown in Picture 8.
-
Start pasting the teardrop sticks around the circle, beginning with the short stick. You don’t have to follow the order; just paste random-sized sticks so they resemble sun rays, pictures 9 and 10.
-
Once one side is complete, repeat the same steps on the other side; picture 11.
-
Your sunburst wall art is ready! You can make a border with sticks around it or leave it as it is. Either way, it will look beautiful once you hang or stick it on the wall.
