Iran will be at FIFA World Cup and play in US, says Infantino – Sport
ANTALYA: FIFA president Gianni Infantino told AFP on Tuesday that Iran “will be at the World Cup” and will play their group matches in the United States as scheduled, despite the Middle East war.
“Iran will be at the World Cup,” Infantino said at half-time as Iran beat Costa Rica 5-0 in a friendly in Turkey.
“That’s why we’re here. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy.” “I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine,” added Infantino, whose attendance at Tuesday’s game was unannounced.
Infantino went on to stress that Iran’s “matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw”.
The World Cup, being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, starts on June 11.
Iran are set to play their first Group G game against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. They are then scheduled to play Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 27.
Iran’s participation had been thrown into doubt by the war with the US and Israel that broke out on Feb 28.
“For us, what matters most are FIFA’s rules and regulations. We will comply with whatever FIFA decides. Every host country has made commitments to FIFA and must honour them,” Mahdi Mohammadnabi, the vice president of the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI), told AFP at the match.
The FFIRI had said earlier this month it was “negotiating” with FIFA to relocate the country’s World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also said that her country is prepared to host Iran’s first-round matches at the tournament if needed.
‘Fruitful discussion’
Infantino initially said that US President Donald Trump had given assurances that the Iranian team would still be welcome.
But Trump then stated that Iran’s team should not travel to the tournament “for their own life and safety”.
Iran hit back at Trump’s comments, saying that “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup”.
On Tuesday, Mohammadnabi said Infantino had been en route from Mexico to Qatar.
“Having learnt that we were organising friendly matches here, he came to see us in person, and we had a fruitful discussion,” Mohammadnabi said.
“Given our history in this competition, it is only natural that FIFA should support the Iranian team. Mr Infantino is providing the necessary support to our national team and has given our players a great boost.”
Asked before the game if Iran would be at the World Cup, back-up striker Dennis Eckert Ayensa told AFP: “Inshallah” (god willing).
Iran, who also played a friendly against Nigeria in the Turkish town of Belek last Friday, crushed Costa Rica, who have not qualified for the World Cup, 5-0 on Tuesday.
Skipper Mehdi Taremi, with two penalties, Ali Gholizadeh and Mohammad Mohebbi put Iran four goals up by the break. Half-time substitute Mehdi Ghayedi added a fifth in the 51st minute by which time coach Amir Ghalenoei had started to empty his bench.
Before the game, Iran’s players wore black armbands and posed with photos of what officials said were young victims of the war, including those killed in an airstrike on a primary school in Iran on the first day of the conflict.
The airstrike on the school in the southern Iranian city of Minab on Feb 28 killed at least 170 people, including students and teachers.
The New York Times has reported that the preliminary findings of a US military investigation indicate that a US Tomahawk cruise missile hit the school due to a targeting mistake.

Family members allowed to meet Raza in hotel – Sport
LAHORE: The HBL-Pakistan Super League management has allowed Lahore Qalandars all-rounder Sikandar Raza to meet his family members in his hotel room during the ongoing 11th edition, according to a message shared by the cricketer on social media on Tuesday.
“Thank you@The RealPCBMedia and@thePSLt20 management for allowing my family and relatives to come and see me in my room. Your kind gesture is greatly appreciated,” Sikandar shared in a message on his X account.
On Sunday, some visitors were not allowed by the PSL management to enter Sikandar’s room in a Lahore hotel which created an undesirable incident as Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi intervened to let Sikandar’s visitors into Sikandar’s room while ignoring the instructions of the PSL security staff.
On Monday, Qalandars’ management imposed a cash fine of Rs1 million on Shaheen for breaching the security protocol.
Sikandar, who is a Pakistani by birth, defended his position on the matter saying that he visits Pakistan once in a year for the PSL, because of which his relatives came to meet him in the hotel room instead of the Business Centre.
When contacted, the PCB media department said that close family relatives were already allowed to meet cricketers in their room.
On Sunday, however, Sikandar’s friends were trying to meet the cricketer in his hotel room, which was not allowed by the PSL management.

Pakistan’s Asian Cup qualifying campaign ends with defeat – Sport
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign ended on a disappointing note as Myanmar defeated the hosts 2-1 in their final Group ‘E’ match at the Jinnah Stadium here on Tuesday.
The victory gave Myanmar their fourth win of the round, helping them finish second in the group with 12 points behind Syria, while Pakistan concluded their campaign with two points from six matches.
Coached by Nolberto Solano, Pakistan produced an energetic first-half display and created several promising opportunities but were undone by defensive lapses early in the second half before a late fightback proved insufficient.
The match began cautiously, with both sides probing for openings during the opening exchanges. Myanmar threatened first when Zaw Win Thein’s effort was blocked by a timely sliding challenge from Waqar Ehtisham, while Than Paing later headed wide from Hein Phyo Win’s free-kick.
Pakistan gradually grew into the contest. Captain Alamgir Ghazi led from the front, testing goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung with a powerful strike from distance midway through the half.
Moments later, Pakistan came close again when a cross from the left was headed down by Ali Uzair at the far post, but Shayek Dost failed to make clean contact. Zin then produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Dost from point-blank range after Ali Uzair had knocked the ball into his path.
Despite Myanmar’s occasional attacks, Pakistan finished the first half on top but were unable to break the deadlock as the teams went into the interval level. The complexion of the match changed just a minute into the second half. A back pass from Waqar was misjudged by goalkeeper Saqib Hanif, with the ball striking his standing leg and rolling into the net to hand Myanmar an unexpected lead.
Myanmar capitalised on the momentum and doubled their advantage just before the hour mark. Lwin Moe Aung broke free down the right flank and delivered a precise low cross that Than Paing tapped home from close range.
The visitors controlled possession thereafter, combining well with quick passing moves to frustrate Pakistan’s attempts to recover.
Pakistan continued to push forward and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Shayek Dost headed in a pinpoint cross from Tufail Shinwari to score the hosts’ first goal since Etzaz Hussain’s strike against Afghanistan away from home.
The goal sparked late urgency, even as Pakistan were reduced to 10 men after Junaid Shah was forced off injured with all substitutions already used. However, Myanmar held firm to secure victory.
Speaking after the match, Pakistan head coach Nolberto Solano defended goalkeeper Saqib despite the costly error.
“I am disappointed after the defeat, but I am proud of these boys. They played very well, especially in the intense first half,” he said, adding that mistakes are part of football even for top goalkeepers.
Centre-back Abdullah Shah said Pakistan had chances to win the game.
“Our plan was simple — we wanted to win and we tried our best. If we had converted our chances, the result could have been different.”
Myanmar head coach Myo Hlaing Win praised both teams, commending Pakistan’s young side for providing a tough contest and thanking the Pakistan Football Federation for its hospitality. Player of the match Than Paing credited his team’s execution of their game plan, saying both sides had played good football.
With Syria securing top spot in Group ‘E’, Myanmar ended their campaign on a positive note, while Pakistan were left to reflect on missed opportunities despite an encouraging fighting display.

Fakhar Zaman suspended for two PSL matches for ball-tampering
Lahore Qalandars batter Fakhar Zaman has been suspended for two Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches after he was found guilty of breaching the code of conduct, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the final over of Sunday’s match between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars, with the former needing 14 runs to win. Fakhar, Lahore captain Shaheen Afridi and fast bowler Haris Rauf were involved in a brief discussion, during which Fakhar and Rauf passed the ball between them.
The umpire then approached Rauf and asked to see the ball. Following consultations with the square-leg umpire, the officials awarded five penalty runs to Karachi and ordered the ball to be changed. The penalty proved costly as Karachi went on to chase down a target of 129 with three balls to spare, Abbas Afridi hitting a four and a six to seal a four-wicket victory.
On Monday, the PCB had officially charged Fakhar with ball-tampering.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the PCB said, “Fakhar Zaman has been suspended for two HBL PSL matches after he was found guilty of a level 3 offence for breaching Article 2.14 of the applicable code of conduct for players and player support personnel during the Lahore Qalandars vs Karachi Kings match on Sunday, March 29 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.”
The PCB said that the incident had occurred during the ending moments of the match when the on-field umpires penalised Lahore Qalandars for five runs and the ball was changed before the start of the last over of Karachi Kings’ batting innings.
It said that on-field Umpires Shahid Saikat, Faisal Khan Aafreedi, TV Umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth Umpire Tariq Rasheed levelled the charge, it said.
According to the board, Fakhar denied the offence and contested the charge at a full disciplinary hearing in accordance with the code of conduct.
“Match Referee Roshan Mahanama conducted the disciplinary hearing and made the determination after reviewing all evidence and providing an opportunity of personal hearing to Fakhar. Lahore Qalandars Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Team Director Sameen Rana and Team Manager Farooq Anwar were also present during the hearing,” the PCB said.
According to the PCB, the commission of a level 3 offence for the first time carries a minimum penalty of a one-match ban and a maximum penalty of a two-match ban.
