Meta’s Threads is Once Again Making a Huge Comeback Against X

Published

on

Meta’s Threads is now seeing higher daily usage on mobile devices than X, according to a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb. While X continues to lead on the web, Threads has recorded steady growth in daily active users on its iOS and Android apps over recent months.

Similarweb data shows that Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android as of January 7, while X recorded 125 million daily active users on mobile platforms. The increase follows months of sustained growth for Threads.

The shift appears to reflect longer-term usage trends rather than a direct response to recent controversies surrounding X. Those incidents involved users employing the platform’s integrated AI tool, Grok, to generate non-consensual nude images of women, including, in some cases, minors.

Concerns over the deepfake content prompted the California Attorney General to open an investigation into Grok. Similar investigations have also been launched in the UK, the EU, India, Brazil, and other regions.

The developments on X also led social networking startup Bluesky to see an increase in app installs in recent days.

Factors Driving Threads’ Mobile Growth

Threads’ rise in daily mobile usage may be driven by several factors, including cross-promotion through Meta’s larger platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, where Threads is regularly promoted to existing users.

The platform has also focused on creators and rolled out new features at a rapid pace. Over the past year, Threads introduced interest-based communities, improved filters, direct messages, long-form text, disappearing posts, and has recently been spotted testing games.

Habitual Engagement

The steady rise in daily active users suggests that more people are using Threads on mobile devices as a regular habit rather than temporarily.

Meta said in August 2025 that Threads had surpassed 400 million monthly active users. The company later reported in October that the platform had reached 150 million daily active users.

X Still Ahead On Web

Despite Threads’ gains on mobile, X continues to dominate web usage. Similarweb reported that X sees around 150 million daily web visits, compared with limited traction for Threads online.

As of January 13, X recorded 145.4 million daily web visits, while Threads logged 8.5 million daily web visits across Threads.com and Threads.net combined.

Gap Narrows in the US Market

Similarweb noted that X remains ahead of Threads in the US, though the gap is narrowing. A year ago, X had roughly twice as many daily active users in the US as it does now.

The firm previously reported that Threads was closing the gap with X on mobile devices after recording 127.8 percent year-over-year growth as of late June 2025.
