Portugal to return to F1 calendar in 2027 and 2028
Formula One will return to Portugal’s Portimao circuit in 2027 and 2028 after the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort drops off the calendar.
Formula One announced a two-year deal in a statement on Tuesday.
The 4.6-km Algarve International circuit in the country’s south last hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, both seasons impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic with stand-in venues.
In 2020 seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton took his 92nd career win at Portimao, breaking the record previously held by Michael Schumacher. Hamilton also won in 2021.

“The interest and demand to host a Formula One Grand Prix is the highest that it has ever been,” said Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali, thanking the Portuguese government and local authorities.
The financial terms of the deal were not announced.
“Hosting the Grand Prix in the Algarve reinforces our regional development strategy, enhancing the value of the territories and creating opportunities for local economies,” said Economy Minister Manuel Castro Almeida.
Portugal first hosted a grand prix in Porto in 1958, with subsequent races at Monsanto and Estoril near Lisbon. The late Brazilian great Ayrton Senna took his first grand prix pole and win at the latter circuit in 1985.
Formula One announced last year that Zandvoort, a home race for four-times world champion Max Verstappen, would drop off the calendar after 2026.
The championship already features a record 24 races and Domenicali has spoken of European rounds alternating to allow others to come in.
Belgium’s race at Spa-Francorchamps is due to be dropped in 2028 and 2030 as part of a contract extension to 2031 announced last January.

LA28 Olympics to open ticket draw on Jan 14 with seats from $28
LA28 said on Monday that fans will be able to register starting January 14 for a random ticket draw covering all Olympic sports at the Los Angeles Games with organisers promising at least 1 million tickets priced at $28.
Registration via the LA28 tickets page will give fans a chance to secure a time slot to purchase tickets in April, with fans who are not selected automatically registered for subsequent ticket drops.
“Every sport starts at $28 and that’s not just lip service to a couple tickets in the corner of some venue, but a meaningful number of tickets,” said Allison Katz-Mayfield, LA28’s senior vice president of Games delivery revenue.
“We’re looking at at least a million tickets at $28 and we’ve got about a third of our tickets under $100.”

LA28’s announcement comes amid backlash to high ticket prices for next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Registration will be open until March 18 and there is no advantage to registering early. No purchase or payment is required to sign up for the draw.
“No matter when you go in, whether you’re the first person in or the last person in, you have the same opportunity,” Katz-Mayfield said.
She called the draw “the fairest way to ensure that the broadest number of people can get access to tickets and that no one is advantaged or disadvantaged.”
She added that the registration process will help ensure the tickets get into the hands of fans and not brokers or bots.
Locals boosted
Residents living near Olympic venues who register will also have a chance to obtain slots in a special locals’ presale, allowing them to buy before tickets go on sale to the general public.
Paris 2024 sold a record 12 million tickets. LA28’s registration puts it a year ahead of the timeline used for those Games, and ticket sales are expected to account for about a third of LA28’s overall revenue target.
The ticketing process will be run by LA28’s official ticketing service providers AXS and Eventim, and all tickets will be digital.
Tickets for the Paralympic Games will go on sale in 2027.
Officials encouraged fans to sign up to the LA28 newsletter for updates, including further details on the January 14 ticket draw registration launch.

Sri Lanka to arrest cricket legend Ranatunga over oil scam
COLOMBO: Authorities in Sri Lanka plan to arrest World Cup-winning cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga on corruption charges relating to his time as petroleum minister, a court was told Monday.
Ranatunga and his brother are accused of changing the procedure for awarding long-term oil procurement contracts, making spot purchases at a higher cost, a corruption watchdog said.
“The total loss to the state from 27 purchases is 800 million rupees,” the equivalent of just over $5 million at the time the deals were made in 2017, according to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
Arjuna was abroad and would be arrested on his return, the commission told Colombo Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama The former minister’s elder brother Dhammika Ranatunga, then chairman of the state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, was arrested on Monday and later released on bail.
The magistrate imposed a travel ban on Dhammika, who is a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and the United States. The next hearing is scheduled for March 13.
Arjuna, 62, a left-hand batter, lifted the 1996 Cricket World Cup for Sri Lanka after defeating Australia, his island nation’s greatest cricketing triumph.
The case against the Ranatunga brothers is part of a wider crackdown by the government of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who came to power last year on a pledge to tackle endemic corruption.
Another Ranatunga brother, Prasanna, a former tourism minister, was arrested last month over an insurance fraud case.
That case is pending, but he had previously been convicted in June 2022 for extorting money from a businessman. He is on a two-year suspended prison term.

Security beefed up for Ashes Adelaide Test after Bondi shooting
Police armed with rifles will be part of a beefed up security presence at the third Test between Australia and England at Adelaide Oval after the Bondi Beach shooting attacks, officials said, while flags will be flown at half-mast.
South Australia state Premier Peter Malinauskas said extra measures would be in place for the Ashes clash that starts on Wednesday, although there was no intelligence pointing to an elevated threat level.
“Given the events that have occurred in Sydney, there will be additional protocols put in place at Adelaide Oval,” he said late Monday.
“This is done only as a precautionary measure, but it is appropriate that we are in an increasing sense of alertness just at the moment.”
An attack by a father and son on a Jewish celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday killed 15 people with dozens injured.
One of the assailants was killed, while the other is in a critical condition in hospital.
South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said special security-response police, armed with rifles, would be present in and around the Adelaide Oval during the Test.
“There’s a balance between the concern about police officers carrying rifles in and about the community, balanced with the need for us to be able to effectively respond to an event, should an event occur and these officers are specifically trained for that purpose,” he said.
“There’s no intelligence at this time to indicate that there are any increased levels of threat or security risks around the cricket or any other community event,” he said.
Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board released a joint statement to pay tribute to the Bondi Beach victims, saying they were “horrified”.
“All of our thoughts are with the victims, their friends and families, the Jewish community and the people of Australia at this deeply distressing time,” they said.
“Our condolences go out to all those affected.”
There will be a moment of silence observed before the Test and players from both sides will wear black armbands.
“While sport can seem insignificant at times like this, we have the unusual opportunity to bring millions of people together to pay tribute, to console and to contemplate what we want our nation to be,” said Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg.
“We will continue to look at ways cricket can support and honour those who have been affected by the Bondi shootings and thank those who provided assistance during and since this tragedy.”
