The ROG Xbox Ally X Will Help Microsoft Define Mobile Gaming’s Future

Published

on

Having spent some time with the ROG Xbox Ally X, courtesy of Asus’ PR team, the portable console is not only a perfect reflection of today’s PC gaming market, it also points out a path for the industry to follow.

Everything You Need To Know Is In The Rog Xbox Ally X’s Name

Let’s start with the name. Every part of the composite is rightly there — the ROG brand name, the Xbox brand Name, the product name, and the ‘this is the extended specs version’ X — but it is rather unwieldy. Much like the franchises that drive the top titles, everything needs to be on show and above the line, even if it makes the resulting product a tad unwieldy to type and say.

That most casual gamers are going to think “it’s the portable X-Box” and be done with it reflects a community deciding on a communal name for a title, and there’s little that the marketing department can do. It’s the product itself that counts, not the name.

Does The Rog Xbox Ally X Windows OS Work?

By choosing Windows 11 as the base, Asus and Microsoft have made the ROG Xbox Ally X a complicated beast to navigate. While it is mitigated by using the Xbox launcher and toggling to appear full-screen and run on startup, it adds a layer of complexity to the Ally.

Sitting alongside the Xbox Launcher, you have Armoury Crate, which is Asus’ launcher. Previous ROG Ally owners will be familiar with this launcher as it drives the earlier Ally handsets. Outside of the two top brands in the console market, many will opt to play games from their Steam or Epic Games collections, which means using another launcher. And on top of all that, you have the Windows 11 interface itself, which may be necessary for homebrew games, older titles installed from the source material, or for accessing services like BBC iPlayer or Netflix to watch a film.

There’s an argument that all of this should be stripped away, that the interface should be clean, that the flow is to switch on the device, see a game, start a game, and that’s it. When you look at console-based gaming, both in the home with Xbox and PlayStation, or in the curious hybrid space that is Nintendo’s Switch.

Yet, when you look at the current top-tier games, the sort of games that the ROG Xbox Ally X is expected to play, you see complexity. You see multiple game modes, you see control schemes that change depending on the state you may be in. Is that any different to the various launchers and variable UX that the Ally X presents?

Rather than paring back the gaming world to create a simple interface, the Xbox Series X is built around taking something complex and making the process smoother. It embraces the chaotic and underfinable but separate gaming worlds and lets you jump between these equal spaces in your own way.

Three Ways To Play With The Rog Xbox Ally X

First up is streaming your game from the cloud. This function is built into the Xbox Launcher, and those with a Game Pass subscription can search through a subset of the game catalogue. With one touch, you can be underway. The latest release of Doom, The Dark Ages, is part of Game Pass and available for immediate play. Everything is set up, any cloud-based game save files are used, and you are taken right into the action.

This is where the specs of the ROG Xbox Ally X are less critical. Much of the heavy lifting can be done in the cloud, so all the console needs is a strong internet connection; the controls, settings, and other features that are built in are already set up. While it is a subset of games, and you do need a subscription, this is the epitome of “it just works.”

Then you have direct downloads and purchases through the Xbox Store. Again, look at Doom: The Dark Age. It’s a simple matter (after adding payment details) to buy and download the title. Any PC titles already bought for Xbox will be available to download here (and Game Pass owners can download games and play them while their subscription is active at no extra cost).

I’m going to add Steam and Epic clients in here as well. While those platforms are designed for a broader range of specifications and compatibility across the PC platform, they offer a consistent ecosystem of games. No doubt consumers will have an extensive collection of games on Xbox, Steam or Epic, and it is to the credit of this partnership that it is not locked down to just the Xbox titles.

Downloading means a closer examination of the specs of the ROG Ally as well as the requirements of the title. The concessions made to create a portable console involve trade-offs that are evident in current major titles. As the years tick by (and everyone will assume that any ROG Ally is going to have some longevity), the question of suitable specs will become more prevalent, and decisions around suitability will need to be made.

The third way is to utilise the underlying Windows operating system to install almost anything you like, such as the various homebrew versions of the original Doom from 1993 that can run under Windows 11. That could be from the Microsoft Store, it could be direct from the developer, the possibilities are endless. It’s a bit of a chore to get some launchers to accept an external program – you can point to the executable, manually add some, or hope that the third-party libraries are picked up and scanned, so it’s a bit hit or miss. It’s straightforward enough to drop down to Windows and launch from the desktop if you must!

You might spot that, once again, we have a hierarchy of complexity and flexibility that allows you to find your own comfort zone.

The Rog Xbox Ally X And The Nintendo Switch

The ROG Xbox Ally X enters a curious market space. On one side, you have the obvious comparison to the PlayStation and Xbox home consoles — add a USB dock and external controller, and the ROG Ally can be used as its own home console. However, the compromises required to run games on the hardware become more apparent as the screen size increases.

The Nintendo Switch offers mobile gameplay in a similar format, as well as integration with the home setup via a dock, making for an easy comparison. Mobile Nintendo consoles from the Gameboy and DS through to the Switch have always had a challenger in the wings, from the Sega Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket to the Sony PSP and PlayStation Vita. Now the Switch and Switch 2 have an Xbox-branded yardstick.

If we’re going to go for a comparison, then the Switch is the simpler and more focused system, while the ROG Ally is the more complex and flexible system.

How The Rog Xbox Ally X Can Define PC Gaming

But there is another challenger in the wings to the ROG Xbox Ally X, and it’s the one that I suspect many will make… Valve’s Steam Deck. This is focused around Valve’s Steam store and the Linux-powered Steam Deck offers a slightly less complex environment (due to the initial limitation of installing games from the store), although it is possible to drop out of the Linux launcher and get a command line for more complex tasks.

Research by IDC at the start of the year indicated sales of around 6 million in this high-end portable gaming space, with the Steam Deck accounting for two-thirds of the sales. That’s the target and the market the ROG Ally is aiming for, and with this latest release, it now has the might of Microsoft backing it.

I could easily see Microsoft ensuring that developers looking to feature their games in the Xbox Store ensure that their games support and are playable on the ROG Xbox Series X — at the very least through streaming. That could be the biggest win that this ROG Ally delivers to the mobile gaming community.

This complex, oversized, and delightful device can redefine the mobile future of high-end gaming, offering a simplicity that surpasses other consoles by providing a single device that can run everything in the PC gaming space.

Oppo Find X9 Series Will Have Google-Powered AI Features

Published

on

Oppo Find X9 series is all set to be launched outside of China next week. Ahead of the October 28 launch, the company has been teasing its new features one by one. In the latest announcement, Oppo has revealed a deeper collaboration with Google for several AI features on its upcoming phones. These include the likes of the Mind Space app, enhanced Gemini integration with first-party Oppo apps and more.

Oppo is teaming up with Google to personalize the AI experience and offer more capabilities on its new Find X9 series. Starting with Oppo’s Mind Space app, you’ll be able to save on-screen content via a three-finger swipe gesture and then have Gemini AI act on the saved info.

For instance, you can add your preferences and ideas for a trip to the said app and then ask Gemini to create a detailed itinerary. Moreover, Mind Space will automatically categorize saved content to offer a more organized experience.

The Oppo Find X9 and Find X9 Pro will run on Android 16-based ColorOS 16. It will also bring better Gemini integration with first-party apps and Nano Banana AI image editing capabilities. You’ll also get access to Gemini Live on Oppo’s upcoming flagship phones.

All the new AI features (Mind Space, AI Search, AI Call Summary, AI VoiceScribe, AI Recorder, and AI Writer) are built on Oppo’s AI Private Computing Cloud with Google Cloud protection. It is said to ensure that “sensitive data for AI processing is handled in a secure and encrypted environment.” Oppo Find X9 buyers will also be eligible for a free three-month Google AI Pro subscription.

While having new AI capabilities on flagship phones is great, most of these features aren’t always reliable. I’ve struggled to trust AI for personal use cases and important tasks. It’ll be interesting to see if the Oppo Find X9 series can change my perception.

“Working closely with partners like Google allows us to integrate next-generation AI experiences that are not only powerful but also highly personalized and secure,” said Kai Tang, President of Software Engineering at OPPO. “Our goal is to provide users with an AI assistant that both truly understands their personal needs and is also worthy of being entrusted with their personal data.”

Next iPad May Steal iPhone 17 Pro Upgrade

Published

on

Apple is working on a new iPad Pro for 2027 (already!) and it seems it will take one of the features which pleased fans in the iPhone 17 Pro: a vapor cooling chamber.

“One of the best new features in Apple Inc.’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is the vapor chamber, a liquid-cooling system that helps tame the heat generated by the smartphones’ powerful chips,”says Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.

ForbesiOS 26.0.2 Release Date Latest: Is The Mystery iPhone Update Nearly Here?

Personally, I never found the iPhone 16 Pro got uncomfortably hot, but Gurman correctly points out that with the latest models you can “now dive into intensive games, advanced video editing or processing-heavy Apple Intelligence tasks without feeling like you need an oven mitt.”

In early testing of the new iPad Pro with M5 chip, released on Wednesday, Oct. 22, I have not found any issues with the tablet getting even remotely warm.

Of course, that’s not the whole story: to run demanding apps and, more importantly, to sustain them, the processor needs to keep its cool more than ever. As Gurman puts it, “The iPad Pro also can occasionally hit its limits and overheat — especially as demands on the device grow… Now that Apple’s iPhone chips are nearly as powerful as laptop versions, this feature has become critical.”

Apple will include an updated processor, the M6, Gurman says, perhaps built with a 2-nanometer production technique, which would add performance and efficiency.

It’s worth noting that there’s already a cooling system in the iPad Pro, with a copper heatsink, as reported by 9to5Mac. But the vapor cooling chamber in the iPhone, a deceptively small and slim element that moves heat around at speed.

So, to add it to the iPad Pro would be another way to differentiate it from other iPads in the range. It already has an OLED screen, and it’s thinner than the iPad Air, but the more differences to justify the price difference the better, Apple may consider.

Gurman says that he thinks Apple is using an 18-month cadence for the iPad Pro, which means the iPad Pro with M6 is likely to arrive in spring 2027.

15 New Apple iPhone 17 And iPhone 17 Pro Cases To Protect Your Phone

Published

on

Now that the latest iPhones are out, you may want a case to go with it. After all, although the price increases predicted didn’t properly materialize, the iPhone is a valuable piece of kit.

Before you ask, last year’s cases don’t fit, and anyway, do you really want a year-old case on your brand-new phone?

Here are a dozen of the newest releases, and they come in varying styles, from wraparound wallets to high-protection sleeves. Choose from leather, Apple’s new TechWoven or a transparent case to show off the colorful phone within. Unless otherwise stated, all cases here are available for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Look out for whether the case has an open section where the Camera Control sits, or a cover that still allows the pressure-sensitive and capacitive control to work.

The deals highlighted in this post were independently selected by the Contributor and do not contain affiliate links.

Smooth Leather Case

Nomad Modern Leather Case with Horween Leather

$75 from nomadgoods.com

Camera Control: Cover

California-based Nomad makes a wide range of products, including iPhone cases and a just-released Apple Watch Band. Horween leather is one of the options for the back cover of the Modern Leather case, though other leather options are also available, and are $20 cheaper.

Horween leather, especially, gains a unique patina the more it is used. The case is strong enough to survive an eight-foot drop, the company says. The bumpers are 2.2mm thick and they rise above the display at the corners for further protection. The edges have a concave finish, designed for extra grip.

Slim Protection

Pitaka Aramid ProGuard Case

$59.99 from ipitaka.com

Camera Control: Cover

Protection on the Pitaka cases partly comes from cushioning on the rear corners and partly from what’s described as aerospace-grade aramid fiber. The back is textured, to add extra grip.

Unlike some cases which have dealt with the complex needs of the Camera Control capacitive button, Pitaka has developed a cover that’s slim but responsive when you press or slide your finger on it.

Fashion-Forward Protection

Beats Rugged MagSafe Case

$79 from beatsbydre.com

Camera Control: Cover

Beats, the other brand that Apple owns, has a case that doesn’t look rugged. Rugged usually means bulky but the choice of colors, such as Sierra orange makes this case more style-focused. If orange is too much for you, Everest black and rocky blue will suit quieter tastes.

There’s a big lip over the edge of the display designed to keep it safe. The bottom half of the case, including the back and edges, is rougher to make it stay in your hand, while the top half is completely smooth.

Transparent Protection

Mous Clarity MagSafe
